About Celeste Havener’s Original Wire Animal Sculptures
Wire started as a pastime playing hall monitor to my naughty horses. I have two Arabians and two BLM or Mustangs. Day and night. The Arabians are princesses, they are beautiful and eat like… picky princesses. They take a bite and lift their heads to take in the scenery. Obi and Bella, the mustangs, are survivors. Or perhaps we could just call them piggy. When the Arabians lift their heads the mustangs dive for whatever is left in the feed pan. So I must spend time making sure each horse eats what is in their bowl and nothing else.
While I waited I began to twist the hay wire into shapes. Horses came easily. I spend a lot of time watching the horses, the way they watch the world, the way they bicker, the way they sleep. It is fun to translate their actions into sculptures.
Now I also build pronghorn, bison and moose. Pronghorn are fun. The ones who live here are always on the move and graceful. I take inspiration from my friend, Dylan Handrich’s bison herd for the the buffalo. The animals are amazing majestic, graceful and big. The moose… they are like their living counterparts. Cranky. It takes longest to make them and sometimes the wire just ends up as a ball of undetermined shape. So when I get one made it give me great satisfaction.
Working with wire is my meditation. It is like a three dimensional pencil drawing. I have been working with wire and had a barn full of animals never thinking someone would be interested in them but me. Then Mark Ritchie and Leah Hardy came to visit. They both teach art at the University of Wyoming and are dear people. ‘Where do you sell these?’ they asked. ‘Sell?’ I asked. ‘But who would buy them?’ I was doubtful. ‘We would they said in harmony. So I tried them at some local galleries and they were right.
All of my bases and stands are custom built by my woodworker husband Gary Havener of Ace in the Hole Woodworks. Contact me to see what I have in stock or commission me to do a custom designed original baling wire animal sculpture for you. I can incorporate special trinkets as well, such as the bicycle parts, driftwood, and beach glass I have worked with before.
